Wireless Solutions Topic: Communications Distance for Wireless Devices

FAQ No. FAQ01360

Question

How long is the communications distance for wireless devices?

Answer

The distance depends on the type of radio station.

Weak radio: 10 m; Specified low-power: Indoors - 100 m min, Outdoors - 300 m min.; SS radio: Indoors - 60 m min., Outdoors - 300 m min.

  • The communications distance depends on the installation environment (e.g., antenna installation position, height, line of sight, obstacles). Be sure to test communications at the site. (Contact your OMRON representative concerning test devices.)

  • The radio waves are affected by the material of the obstacles. The waves are passed through glass and plastic; attenuated by concrete walls, plasterboard, and mortar; and reflected by metal objects.

Receiver sensitivity can be increased by changing the installation position. Move the antenna to a location with good visibility. Install the antenna in a high place.
